Workshop Title: Using Generative AI to Enhance Science and Engineering Practices
Ai-Chu Elisha Ding, Arne Bewersdorff, and Lehong Shi This workshop introduces teachers to practical ways generative AI (GenAI) tools can be integrated to support both instructional planning in OpenSciEd units and students’ engagement in Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs). Through hands‑on activities, participants will explore how AI can enhance the quality and efficiency of teaching while maintaining responsible and ethical use that supports—rather than disrupts—classroom interactions.
The session emphasizes thoughtful decision‑making about when and how to use GenAI, with a focus on minimizing risk and maximizing instructional value.
Participants will engage in two core activities:
- Supporting teachers’ SEP planning in OpenSciEd units:
Teachers will be introduced to prompt‑engineering strategies that support the preparation and implementation of OpenSciEd instructional materials. Participants will practice developing, refining, and sharing prompts using a sample OpenSciEd unit. - Integrating and supporting students’ use of AI for SEPs:
Participants will explore GenAgents developed by the National GENIUS Center to support students’ engagement in SEPs. Teachers will experience a GenAgent activity from a student perspective and discuss how AI‑assisted SEP activities can be thoughtfully integrated into OpenSciEd instruction.
